Excavation & Drainage Services in New York

Backwell provides integrated excavation and drainage services across New York for commercial, industrial, solar, and municipal construction projects. Excavation and drainage are two disciplines that have to work together. You dig the hole to install the drainage. You grade the ground to direct water to the drainage. You excavate retaining walls that hold back both the ground and the water. When one contractor handles both, the project runs faster and the result holds up longer. Backwell has built its commercial practice around delivering integrated excavation and drainage on one scope.

Excavation & Retaining Walls

Commercial retaining wall projects are where excavation and drainage come together most obviously. The wall has to hold back earth, which means the excavation has to be precise and the base has to be engineered. The wall also has to shed water, which means you need subsurface drainage behind the wall (geotextile-wrapped drain tile, weeps through the wall face, or a full French drain system) tied into the commercial drainage scope. Without drainage, hydrostatic pressure will destroy the wall over time — even a properly built wall. Backwell handles commercial retaining wall excavation and the integrated drainage infrastructure as one coordinated scope.

Retaining wall types we excavate for: segmental block (Allan Block, Versa-Lok, Keystone), poured concrete, boulder walls, steel sheet pile, helical pile anchored walls, and soldier pile and lagging. We coordinate with structural engineers and retaining wall contractors on design and specification.

Excavation & Foundation Work

For commercial foundation work, Backwell excavates to engineered depth, prepares the sub-base, installs perimeter foundation drains where specified, backfills properly in lifts, and restores the surface. Foundation excavation for commercial buildings requires particular attention to soil bearing capacity, groundwater conditions, and the geotechnical engineer's recommendations. Backwell coordinates with geotechnical firms throughout the foundation excavation process. See our foundation excavation page for more details.

Why Integrated Excavation and Drainage Matters

Most commercial contractors separate excavation and drainage into two scopes. One contractor digs the hole, a different contractor comes in to install the drainage, and a third contractor handles the backfill and surface restoration. This works on paper and fails on real sites. Excavation schedules slip and the drainage crew shows up to a site they cannot work on. Drainage sub-base gets disturbed during the hand-off. Backfill compaction gets sloppy because nobody owns the full scope. Backwell handles excavation and drainage as one integrated scope with one crew, one project manager, and one set of accountability. That is why we show up on commercial projects in the first place.

Commercial Compliance Capabilities

Backwell operates on Davis-Bacon prevailing wage under NYS Labor Law, is apprenticeship program compliant under the IRA framework, staffs CPESC-certified environmental professionals, and handles full SWPPP execution under NYSDEC construction general permits. That matters for commercial excavation and drainage on federally-funded projects, solar construction claiming the 30% Investment Tax Credit, and any New York State public works project. Our certified payroll, apprenticeship hour documentation, and environmental compliance paperwork are delivered with every qualifying job.
