Data Center Mass Excavation in Central NY

Mass site grading, structural fill, basement excavation, and slab subgrade preparation for data center construction.

The first 90 days of a data center construction schedule are owned by the mass excavation contractor. A 50 MW colocation campus typically requires 80,000 CY of cut/fill. A 250 MW hyperscaler campus runs 200,000–300,000 CY or more. Backwell self-performs mass excavation across Central New York data center sites with the equipment, crew, and supervision to move the schedule, not stall it.

Mass Excavation Scope We Handle

Cut/Fill Volumes

We've executed multi-hundred-thousand CY earthwork campaigns on solar civil and industrial projects across CNY.

Production Rate

In good ground conditions with full-crew staging, Backwell produces 5,000–10,000 CY per day on a single mass excavation operation. Multi-crew operations on hyperscaler-scale projects run 15,000–25,000 CY per day.

Cut/Fill Engineering

We work with the EPC's civil engineer to optimize cut/fill balance. On solar civil projects we've delivered balanced sites at 59,000+ CY without import or export — that same engineering discipline applies to data center pads.

When import or export is unavoidable, we coordinate with local quarries and disposal sites for predictable haul economics.

Counties We Serve

Compaction Testing & QA/QC

Every lift gets compaction testing per ASTM D698 (standard Proctor) or ASTM D1557 (modified Proctor) per spec. We coordinate with the EPC's third-party testing agency or carry our own ICC-certified testing technicians.

For data center pads, compaction requirements are typically 95% modified Proctor under structural slabs and 92% modified under access roads. We hit these consistently.

Why Backwell

Unit Pricing for Reference

Item Rate
Rock excavation $125 / CY
Undercut & replacement $55 / CY
Imported aggregate $28 / Ton
Dewatering $1,200 / Day per setup

Project-specific pricing for mass earthwork varies based on volume, soil conditions, haul distance, and rock content.

FAQ

What's your largest mass excavation campaign to date?

Multi-hundred-thousand cubic yard earthwork campaigns on solar civil and industrial projects across CNY. Project-specific volumes are confidential, but we have direct experience at the scale required for hyperscaler-class data centers.

Can you handle the rock common in Central NY?

Yes. Limestone is shallow in many Central NY corridors, especially Jefferson, northern Oneida, and parts of Onondaga County. Mechanical breaking with high-capacity excavators and hydraulic hammers — no blasting required. Rock excavation runs at $125/CY unit rate.

What's the longest mass excavation campaign you can sustain?

We've sustained mass excavation crews on solar civil projects for 6–8 months continuous operation. We can stage multi-crew operations on hyperscaler-scale projects.

Do you handle agricultural disturbance compliance?

Yes. Topsoil segregation, subsoil decompaction, severed drain tile repair — NYS DAM compliance is part of our standard scope when active ag land is disturbed.

How fast can you mobilize on a Central NY data center site?

5 business days from NTP for projects within 90 minutes of Syracuse.

Can you guarantee cut/fill balance?

We work with the EPC's civil engineer to optimize cut/fill balance to the maximum extent the site geometry allows. Where balance isn't achievable, we provide unit-rate pricing for import/export so the schedule and budget remain predictable.
