Why Choose Backwell for Septic Repair

Owner-Operated Diagnosis

Ron Starusnak has been installing and repairing septic systems in Central NY since 2007. The same person who diagnoses your problem signs the estimate and supervises the repair. No estimating department disconnected from the work.

Same-Week Response

For active septic failures (sewage on the surface, basement backups, severe odor), we prioritize same-week site visits. Call (315) 400-2654 directly.

Self-Performed Repairs

Excavation, plumbing, septic, and concrete work are all in-house at Backwell. No subcontracted excavation crew, no separate plumbing sub, no scheduling delays from waiting on other contractors.

County Health Department Relationships

We work directly with Onondaga County DOH, Madison County DOH, Oneida County Health Department, Oswego County Health Department, Cayuga County Health Department, Cortland County Health Department, and Jefferson County Public Health Service — we know each county's repair permit process and inspector requirements. Faster permits, faster repairs.

Honest Estimates

Backwell estimates explain what's wrong, what we'll do to fix it, and what it costs. No upselling to a "full system replacement" when a $1,500 line repair will do. If the system can be salvaged, we'll tell you. If it can't, we'll explain why.

Bonded & Insured

Fully insured ($2M general liability), workers' compensation. ISNetworld member, OSHA 30 certified, NYSDEC SWPPP compliant.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my septic system needs repair vs. replacement?

On-site diagnosis is the only way to know for sure. Sometimes a $1,500 line repair restores function. Sometimes the leach field is fully saturated with biomat and only replacement will work. Tank cracks can usually be repaired; saturated drain fields usually require replacement. Backwell provides honest assessment, not upselling.

How fast can you respond to a septic emergency?

For active sewage emergencies (sewage on lawn, basement backup, severe odor), we prioritize same-week response, typically same-day or next-day for diagnostic visits. Call (315) 400-2654.

Do you handle septic line repair from the house to the tank?

Yes. Cracked, bellied (sagging), or root-intruded sewer lines from the house to the tank are common repairs. Camera inspection identifies the exact problem location. Excavation and pipe replacement typically takes half-day to two days.

Will my insurance cover septic repair?

Standard homeowner's insurance typically does NOT cover septic system failures from age or wear. It may cover damage from sudden events (tree falling on tank, vehicle damage). Septic-specific endorsements and "sewer / septic line" riders are available from some insurers and can help. Check your policy.

How long does septic repair take?

Line repairs: half-day to 2 days. D-Box replacement: half-day. Tank replacement: 1–2 days. Leach field replacement: 2–4 days. Full system replacement: 4–6 days. Permit timing adds 2–6 weeks for permitted work depending on county.

Can a saturated leach field be saved?

Sometimes. Aeration treatments, bacterial additives, and resting the field by reducing water use can restore partial function on a moderately saturated field. Severely saturated fields with biomat clogging usually require replacement. We diagnose on site and recommend honestly.

Do you pump the tank as part of repair?

We coordinate with licensed septic pumpers but don't pump tanks ourselves. Pumping is typically done before tank inspection or repair. We can coordinate the pumper as part of our scope.

What's the difference between a leach field and a drain field?

They're the same thing. "Leach field" is more common in the Northeast; "drain field" more common in the South and West. Both refer to the perforated-pipe-and-stone field that distributes treated effluent into the soil after the tank.

How long does a typical septic repair last?

Workmanship is warrantied for 1 year. Tank replacements last 25+ years. Leach field replacements last 20–30 years with proper care. Line repairs last decades unless physical damage (root intrusion, freezing) recurs.

Do you offer financing for septic repair?

Septic repair financing is available through home improvement loan programs and HELOC products. Ask Ron during your estimate.

What about septic repair for commercial properties (restaurants, offices, churches)?

Commercial septic repair is in scope. We've repaired commercial systems for restaurants (with grease trap considerations), churches, offices, and mixed-use buildings. Commercial flow rates and grease management require specific repair approaches.

My septic alarm is going off — what do I do?

First, stop using water in the house — running fixtures will overflow the tank or pump chamber. Then call (315) 400-2654 immediately. Septic alarm activation typically means: (1) effluent pump has failed, (2) high water level in pump tank, (3) leach field cannot accept flow. We diagnose on-site and repair fast.
