Mecklenburg County is Southern Piedmont on the North Carolina line, and its landform is defined by water: the John H. Kerr Reservoir, known locally as Buggs Island Lake, and Lake Gaston flood the Roanoke River valley across the middle and south of the county, leaving long fingers of upland between deeply embayed shoreline. Uplands are rolling with narrow ridges and moderate side slopes, carrying Cecil, Appling, and Wedowee residuum weathered from felsic gneiss and granite, red to strong brown clay subsoils under sandy loam surfaces with deep saprolite.
