County records place a Herkimer County Sewer District facility in Mohawk. Homes that pay a sewer bill are on public sewer; outlying homes are on septic.

The Mohawk series is well drained till, often workable for trenches where it is deep enough. Its shallow associate, Palatine, has shale at 20 to 40 inches.

Not within 100 feet of the stream at the mean high water mark and not below the 10 year flood level.

The NYSDOH Herkimer District Office at 5665 State Route 5, Herkimer, under 10 NYCRR 75.5.

Herkimer County Public Health refers environmental health to the NYSDOH Herkimer District Office, 5665 State Route 5, Herkimer. Under 10 NYCRR 75.5, raised bed, mound and sand filter plans need health department approval before construction, and every design must come from a design professional.

Herkimer County participates in the State Septic System Replacement Fund, which reimburses up to 50 percent of eligible costs with a $10,000 cap for properties in DEC and DOH priority areas.

Septic design in Mohawk: the short answer

The Herkimer County Sewer District treatment plant is referred to in county records as the Mohawk facility, and homes on public mains need no septic design. South of the village, on the farm and hill roads of German Flatts and the neighboring towns, homes are on private systems.

Short answer: Mohawk Valley till soils drain well on the slopes, shale comes up on the steeper ground, and the creek flats flood. A PE stamped design picks the right spot and the right system.

Sewer or septic in the Mohawk area

The county legislature's July 2026 minutes approved emergency repairs to the main sludge pumps at the Mohawk facility and set a hearing on improvements to the district's treatment plant and Frankfort pump station to extend their life and meet anticipated discharge limits. If you pay a sewer bill, you are on that system.

Outside it, private septic. The state's septic replacement priority list for Herkimer County names creeks such as the lower Steele Creek and the upper Moyer Creek, so check whether a failing system near a listed creek qualifies.

How a septic design works in Mohawk

  1. Send the address and a few photos. Use the form below. Estimate in 1 hour, design and install in one written price.
  2. Confirm the lot needs septic. Sewer bill means public sewer. Hill road homes without one need septic.
  3. Deep hole and perc tests. Appendix 75-A requires at least one test hole at least six feet deep at the proposed leaching area and at least two percolation tests per system. Slope pits often show well drained till with shale fragments; low pits show wet, slowly permeable soil.
  4. Design and stamp. Designs are prepared and stamped by a New York licensed Professional Engineer (PE), with new homes sized at 110 gallons per day per bedroom or more.
  5. State review for alternative systems. The state's Herkimer District Office is at 5665 State Route 5, Herkimer. Under 10 NYCRR 75.5, raised, mound and sand filter plans need approval from the health department with jurisdiction before construction.
  6. Building permit. The building permit comes from the code enforcement office for the Village of Mohawk or the town the lot is in.
  7. Install and certify. Backwell coordinates the excavation and builds to the approved plan. An alternative system gets design professional supervision and a written certification to the health department.

Soils and seasonal water around Mohawk

The Mohawk soil series is described by the USDA as well drained, on till plains and till mantled dissected plateaus in the Mohawk and Black River valleys, with moderately low to moderately high conductivity in the substratum. It is often workable for a conventional or shallow trench field if depth allows.

Its associates are Palatine, moderately deep with shale at 20 to 40 inches; Ilion, poorly drained in depressions; and Herkimer soils on nearby alluvial fans. Nunda soils, moderately well drained with slow or very slow permeability in the substratum, also occur in the Mohawk Valley.

What the health department checks

Herkimer County Public Health lists the New York State Department of Health Environmental Unit as its partner for environmental health, and the state's Herkimer District Office serves Fulton, Herkimer and Montgomery Counties. The design rules are Appendix 75-A. For Mohawk these are the items that move the design:

  • Conventional trench field: at least 4 feet of useable soil above rock, tight soil and the high seasonal groundwater, with the highest groundwater at least 2 feet below the trench bottom.
  • Shallow trenches: at least 2 feet but under 4 feet of useable soil, 2 feet of separation under every trench, and no more than 30 inches of matching fill over original grade.
  • Mound: high groundwater at least 1 foot down, bedrock at least 2 feet down, native soil faster than 120 minutes per inch, slope no more than 12 percent, pressure distribution, and an absorption area no wider than 20 feet.
  • No absorption system in ground lower than the 10 year flood level, and no field on slopes steeper than 15 percent.

Common Mohawk site problems and the design fix

Creek flat that floods

No field below the 10 year flood level and none within 100 feet of the creek. The field goes uphill.

Palatine shale on the slope

Shallow trenches with 2 to 4 feet of useable soil, a mound with bedrock at least 2 feet down on slopes of 12 percent or less.

Slow substratum on Nunda soil

Slow layers below can perch water. The test pit and percs set whether trenches work or the design moves to fill.

What it costs

We did not find a published state plan review fee for one house in Herkimer County, so none is quoted. Building permit fees come from your local code office.

Design and install are priced together in writing for the lot. Hillside lots with shale or slow substratum usually need fill.

Grant money: Herkimer County takes part in the State Septic System Replacement Fund, which reimburses property owners up to 50 percent of eligible costs with a $10,000 maximum in priority areas set by DEC and DOH. The state list for Herkimer County includes the lower Steele Creek and its tributaries, the upper Moyer Creek, the middle East Canada Creek, the middle Spruce Creek, the upper West Canada Creek and Hinckley Reservoir, along with many Adirondack lakes in the north of the county.

Timeline

Testing, PE design, NYSDOH Herkimer District Office approval for alternative systems, local building permit, install.

Raised beds with finer fill wait six months through a freeze and thaw cycle. The schedule comes with the written price.
