On June 1, 2026 the Verona Town Board adopted the Durhamville Sewer District, subject to permissive referendum. It is a $13.3 million low pressure system with 223 grinder pumps connecting at Bennett Road to the City of Oneida wastewater plant.

The town estimates $875 a year for a typical one family home and $1,750 for a two family home, with no hook up cost.

Yes. A completed $500,000 state funded project installed gravity sewer in the Hamlet of Verona to reduce pollution from old septic systems.

Appleton, Minoa and Niagara soils cover a large part of the lake plain and are wet from about 8 to 12 inches in county data. Appendix 75-A needs high groundwater at least 2 feet below a conventional trench, so raised systems and mounds are common.

Backwell coordinates the testing, design, permit and installation. Designs are prepared and stamped by a New York licensed Professional Engineer.

First question in Verona: are you getting sewer?

Verona is in the middle of a sewer buildout, so before anyone designs a septic system here, we check where the parcel sits.

  • Durhamville. On June 1, 2026 the Verona Town Board adopted the Durhamville Sewer District, subject to permissive referendum. It is a $13.3 million low pressure system with 223 grinder pumps that connects at Bennett Road to the City of Oneida wastewater plant. The town estimates $875 a year for a typical one family home and $1,750 for a two family home, built turn key with no hook up cost, funded with a state EFC grant and an EPA grant.
  • Verona hamlet. A completed $500,000 state project installed gravity sewer in the Hamlet of Verona, aimed at pollution from old, poorly built septic systems.
  • The lakeshore. The Town of Verona and Verona Beach State Park are served by the East Oneida Lake treatment plant in Sylvan Beach, upgraded for $51 million and completed in October 2026.

If your lot is in none of these, or the district has not reached you yet and your field has failed, you need a septic design. Backwell coordinates the testing, design, permit and installation. Designs are prepared and stamped by a New York licensed Professional Engineer (PE).

Lake plain soils: wet is the rule

USDA soil data for the Town of Verona shows Appleton soils on about 14 percent of the town, Lima about 12 percent, Minoa about 7 percent, Niagara about 6 percent, Canandaigua about 5 percent, and Lamson and Honeoye about 4 percent each.

  • Appleton is somewhat poorly drained calcareous till. County data shows wet soil from about 8 inches. Mound and raised systems are common on it.
  • Lima is moderately well drained till, sometimes dense, with low to moderately high conductivity below and wet soil from about 21 inches.
  • Minoa is somewhat poorly drained very fine sand laid down in old glacial lakes, and Niagara is somewhat poorly drained silty lake plain soil. Both show wet soil from about 12 inches in county data.
  • Honeoye is the well drained exception, found on the higher till.

Appendix 75-A asks for at least 4 feet of usable soil and high groundwater at least 2 feet below the trench bottom for a conventional field. With water at 8 to 12 inches across most of the lake plain, a conventional trench is the exception in Verona. That is the same reason the town is putting in sewer.

The outlying hamlets, Verona Mills, Verona Station, Stacy Basin, Starks Landing, Dumbarton, New London, Sconondoa and Churchville, sit on that same lake plain, and Higginsville grew up building Erie Canal boats. Lots near the old canal tend to be the flattest and wettest in town, and they are where we expect the deep hole to show water closest to the surface.

Raised bed versus mound on Verona ground

A raised system needs 1 to 2 feet of native soil percing faster than 60 minutes per inch above the restrictive layer, high groundwater at least 1 foot below grade, and at least 2 feet of fill percing at 5 to 30 minutes per inch. A mound needs high groundwater at least 1 foot below grade and bedrock at least 2 feet down, accepts native soil percing faster than 120 minutes per inch, and uses at least 24 inches of approved sand over the stone. On Appleton soil with water at 8 inches, neither is a given; the test pit decides. See raised bed design and mound design.

Steps

  1. Send the address. We check the sewer district maps first. Estimate in 1 hour.
  2. Deep hole and perc tests. At least one hole at least 6 feet deep and at least two perc tests per system.
  3. Design. 110 gallons per day per bedroom; minimum tank 1,000 gallons for 1 to 3 bedrooms.
  4. Town permit. Verona Town Hall is at 6600 Germany Road, Durhamville.
  5. County review if needed. The Oneida County Health Department, 800 Park Ave., Utica, approves alternative treatment technologies for individual homes.
  6. Install and inspect.

Verona problems the design works around

Waiting on sewer with a failing field

The Durhamville district is adopted but subject to referendum and construction. A home that cannot wait may need a replacement now. Sometimes a holding tank is the bridge where the rules allow it.

Flat ground, nowhere for water to go

Canal and lake plain lots near Higginsville, Stacy Basin and State Bridge are flat and wet. Fields must also stay 100 feet from streams, wetlands and wells. See wet yard and wetland.

Bedroom addition on a small lot

Adding a bedroom adds 110 gallons per day to the design and may push a 4 bedroom house to a 1,250 gallon tank. See bedroom addition design.

Costs

When the county reviews a system, its fee schedule (revised March 2022) lists $500 for an individual sewage system and $150 for a site survey. For comparison, the town's published estimate for the Durhamville district is $875 a year for a one family home. Septic build cost depends on whether the lot needs a mound, a raised bed or a trench, so you get a written price per lot in 1 hour.

Timeline

Testing is one day. A raised system on fill that must settle adds six months through one freeze and thaw unless the fill is granular sand or sandy loam compacted in lifts. Spring testing on the lake plain shows the true high water.
